You can find many children's desks online and in stores, but nothing beats designing and making one yourself. That's exactly what Joanne did by using online ordered custom-cut sheet materials. For her DIY project, she chose blank MDF and pine timber panel. The result is a very cute children's desk with storage bins and a wall shelf. Completely unique and custom-made!

We made a desk for a toddler/preschooler with two storage bins on wheels using the provided materials. The length is 140 cm, width 40 cm, and the height approximately 42 cm.

How I Made This Project

Using the delivered wood, we created this desk. First, we attached the left and right pine 'legs' to the pine top with assembly adhesive and 3 L-brackets per leg. Because the L-brackets are attached on the inside, the legs slightly angle inward. We didn't find this disturbing, but you should consider it when attaching the middle legs. Then, we made the storage bins from MDF. First, we attached the wheels to the bottom. Then, we attached the sides using assembly adhesive and screws. We positioned the bottom slightly higher (see photos) so that the wheels are not visible. Tip: it requires precision work, use corner clamps to attach it accurately. We screwed the screws in the bins a bit deeper so that we could fill them with wood filler later on. Finally, we primed and painted these bins. Lastly, we attached the middle 'legs' with 3 L-brackets per leg and assembly adhesive, after making sure that the bins fit. We attached the L-brackets as follows: 2 on the side of the bin, 1 on the side of the seating area. This prevents it from being 'crooked'. We attached the pine wall shelf with shelf brackets, which we painted in the same color as the bins.
